The Accomodation

To maintain the standard of interior furnishings, we regret that we cannot accept pets. This does not apply to assistance dogs.

The telephone will accept incoming calls and allow outgoing emergency and telecom enquiry calls.

Public Transport

South Cape tram stop (part of Manx Electric Railway - great for vintage transport enthusiasts) is very close, up the hill past one house then a few metres on the right along the tram track. A few minutes' walk further up the hill, on the main road, is the bus stop for buses running between Douglas and Ramsey.

Shops

The shops (including a Co-Op, open late) and Post Office (in the EVF garage opposite the Co-Op) are in the centre of the village, half a mile (10 - 15 minutes walk) from the cottage, or a few minutes by bus, tram or car.

Places of Interest in the Local Area

Laxey Beach, Prom and Harbour

Visit The Shed for coffee & panini & cakes, or the Laxey Beach Stop Café for hot & cold snacks, home-made cakes and Artisan ice creams by the Laxey Ice Cream Company. The mobile sauna visits the prom weekly. There are views up towards Snaefell from the harbour.

Laxey Tram Stop & Terminus, Old Laxey Village

Vintage trams running between Douglas and Ramsey stop here (South Cape) for Laxey Beach, and it is the Terminus for the Snaefell Mountain Railway. A place to watch vintage transport in action! There is a ticket office and small café.

The Snaefell Mountain Railway

Vintage tram service to the very top of Snaefell, and at just over 2,000 feet, the highest point on the Island. Lovely views en-route, including over the Laxey Wheel, and panoramic views from the mountain top. On a clear day, views can be had of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Heaven, Mann and the Sea, known as the Seven Kingdoms. There is a café-restaurant at the summit, and dinner can be booked there for the summer sunset tram service.

Christ Church Laxey (The miners' church)

Built by miners for miners, and sited close by the Laxey Tram Stop & Terminus, this pretty little church is open daily for private prayer and reflection. It also offers coffee and chat twice-weekly.

The Great Laxey Wheel (the Lady Isabella) and Mines Trail

The largest working water wheel in the world that once drained the Laxey Mines. Climb to the viewing platform and see the wheel turning beneath you, and enjoy stunning views of Laxey Valley. You can also explore a restored mine shaft on the mines trail. Ballacregga Corn Mill and Tea Rooms is close by for meals and refreshments.

The Laxey & Lonan Heritage Trust Shop

Sited on the way to the Great Wheel and is the Laxey Information Visitor Point. Staff are on hand to advise, chat and supply guidebooks, maps and leaflets.

The Great Laxey Mines Railway

A carefully restored section of track and miniature trains (the Ant and Bee) that once took miners to work, now takes visitors to the mines instead. Catch the trains from Laxey Valley Gardens.

Laxey Valley Gardens

This was once the Washing Floors of the mine, where waste ore was sorted from valuable minerals, and was reclaimed and made into a green area. It is also home to the Snaefell Mine Waterwheel.

Laxey Woollen Mills and Hodgson Loom Art Gallery

Founded by John Ruskin in the 1880s to create work for local people, it still contains original working looms on which the Laxey Manx Tartan, other plaids and tweeds are produced. The shop sells a beautiful array of clothes made from the cloth, or you can buy lengths of cloth if you fancy trying your hand at dressmaking.

King Orry's Grave

The largest prehistoric monument on the Island, with short information trail about the Neolithic people that built it.

For walkers

The Raad-ny-Foillan (Way of the Gull), the Island's premier long distance foothpath, passes close by the cottage front door on its way to Ramsey from Douglas, offering fantastic coastal views; and an enjoyable walk can be had up the Laxey Glen by the side of the Laxey River – you might even see a salmon leap at the right time of year! Another good walk can be had from the cottage up to Lonan Church and Axnfell Plantation – a designated Dark Area for Star Gazing (though some guests have been known to star gaze from Rose Cottage garden). Around 2 miles away, An area worth investigating is Maughold (old celtic crosses in the churchyard)and Port Cornaa, between Laxey and Ramsey

For Peace & Well-being Seekers

Laxey Glen is recommended by Visitisleofman.com as a calm and beautiful environment where the practice of shinrin-yoku (forest-bathing) can be followed for visitors who wish to find relaxation through reconnecting with a natural environment. We would like to add our own recommendation: the Dhoon Glen and Waterfall, a short tram ride from the cottage, an entrancing walk down to the sea through wildflowers and native plants, through woodland and by water, experiencing the force of the Waterfall on the way.
