The Cottage
Rose Cottage is a charming detached 17th century Manx stone cottage situated at South Cape, Laxey, less than 5 minutes walk down steps to the beach and harbour, and only a few yards from the South Cape Manx Electric Railway stop. It has been carefully modernised to a very high standard to give 21st century comfort while still retaining its 17th century character.

There is off-road parking for one car, and on-road parking for a second one, on either side of the porch. In addition, there is space at the side of the house for a small car or a number of motorcycles.

The South Cape South Cape
Laxey is situated on the Island's East coast between Douglas and Ramsey. With its beach with large areas of exposed sand at low tide, its friendly shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs, its coastal and mountain walks for the energetic, and its transport (including the Snaefell Mountain Railway), it makes an ideal base for an enjoyable holiday in the Isle of Man. Make sure you visit the Lady Isabella, the largest working water wheel in the world.
The photo on the left shows the location of the cottage, outlined in red. Click on any of the photos to see them in more detail.
The cottage was originally two separate stone cottages, now converted into one large holiday unit.

Ground Floor
The ground floor contains an entrance porch leading into two luxuriously carpeted lounges, 20ft by 12ft and 15ft by 12ft.
The first lounge contains the dining area and TV area. The TV shown is a satellite digital colour television receiving Freesat.

A utility room with general cleaning materials, fitted with freezer, washing machine and separate tumble dryer completes this floor. Utility Room
Note that being very old, some ground floor parts of the cottage have limited headroom. The clearance to the beams in the kitchen and the utility room is less than 6 ft in places and the height of the back door and the door between the main lounge and the kitchen is less still.

First Floor
The first floor has been the subject of an extensive upgrade. It is fully carpeted, and contains a large double bedroom ...

Duvets, bed linen and clean towels are provided.
Bathroom The bathroom contains a W.C., wash basin and a bath with shower over.

Unlimited supplies of hot water are available from a gas fired Vailant boiler. This also powers the central heating, and there are individually controllable radiators in all rooms.
We have a large garden and it is mainly laid to grass, with a patio area and garden furniture overlooking the beach.

General Information
bullet point To maintain the high standard of interior furnishings, we regret that we cannot accept pets.

bullet point The telephone will accept incoming calls and allow outgoing emergency and telecom enquiry calls.

bullet point South Cape tram stop (part of Manx Electric Railway - great for vintage transport enthusiasts) is very close, up the hill past one house then a few metres on the right along the tram track. A few minutes' walk further up the hill, on the main road, is the bus stop for buses running between Douglas and Ramsey.

bullet point Close by the cottage is the 'Road of the Gull', part of the Isle of Man long distance Coastal Footpath, which leads down onto Laxey Beach and Prom. There, you will find 'The Shed' - the new go-to cafe to chill and watch the sea - and a few minutes stroll to the other end leads you to the old Harbour, and the original Laxey Beach Cafe. Carry on strolling around the corner to find the Laxey river and bridge, with the Shore Hotel pub on one side and the renowned La Mona Lisa Italian restaurant on the other. This is the Old Village centre and can also be reached by less than 10 minutes walk downhill from the cottage.

bullet point The shops (including a local Co-Op) and Post Office are in the centre of the New village, half a mile (10 minutes walk) from the cottage. Here, you will also find the Terminus for the Snaefell Mountain Railway (another must-see for vintage transport enthusiasts) which will take you to the top of Snaefell, the highest point on the Island. Take in the views of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England, then refresh yourself at the restaurant/cafe close by. In the summer, there are special evening services to the summit, to have dinner and watch the sunset.

bullet point Just before you reach the shops, there is a turning off the road leading up into the charming Laxey Glen (great for walkers) with the Gardens and cafe/bistro. Just after the shops is the turning up to the Great Laxey Wheel, but don't forget to visit the little Wheel in the gardens opposite the turning. And don't forget to ride on the Ant and Bee - the original miniature trains that took ore to the washing grounds, now gardens.

We are equipped with broadband and Wi-Fi throughout the whole of the cottage.

bullet point Unfortunately, Rose Cottage is unsuitable for full time wheelchair users. The building is more than 400 years old with thick stone walls and many original features including narrow doorways, oddly-shaped rooms, low ceilings and uneven floors, as you would expect in a building of that age and character. The bathroom/WC and bedrooms are on the first floor, which are accessed by a flight of stairs (no lift).

bullet point We do not accept pets, but if you wish to bring your Assistance Dog, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
